Critical apparatus
Before the introduction of printing, books were copied by hand so variant readings exist. Where copyists made mistakes, and these were in turn copied, a family of texts grew slightly different from other textual traditions. A critical apparatus lists these variant readings so that the student may judge what might have been the original text.
